Ashura Commemorations, Scarborough, Ontario

I was fortunate enough to stumble across the commemorations for Ashura that were taking place in my local park during the autumn of 2019. The ceremonies commemorate the martyrdom of Husyan, the grandson of the Prophet.  The feeling of grief during the event was palpable as was the sense of community and togetherness. I hope these images go some way to communicate what I saw and felt during the event. The Shia community here in Scarborough were kind and generous in allowing me to document the event. I was overwhelmingly made to feel welcome.
